What's new in the Garden

The initial re-development work to the Walled Garden was completed in 1996.

Since then the planting has matured, some too much so!

Changes to the planting are constantly being made in the Walled Garden, not that you would necessarily notice as first.

Recently new trees have been planted, both ornamental and fruit trees.

Two scented rose hedges were laid, the red in 2006 and the white one recently in 2008. The red gave a stunning display in 2007, hopefully by 2009 the white one will too.

Other changes over the past few years in the Walled Garden have been the addition of a planter that spans the first terrace above the amphitheatre. In this grows trailing rosemary which is not fully hardy, so in winter you will see it covered in fleece.

We introduced a viewing point in 2006 which is popular for both new and regular visitors.

We have uncovered one of the frost arches and added information about it so that you can understand how they worked.

Two years ago we had a "band stand" made that is actually more of a gazebo! This is situated at the edge of the amphtitheatre and is used during concerts and plays for refreshments. It also serves as a rain shelter for when people are caught out in one of the many in opportune showers we seem to get!

This year, 2008, we were donated some topiary by Mrs Williams in Radlett. There are bears, balls, birds, pyramids and spirals. The topiaries are approximately fifteen years old and much hard work for Michael Handscombe and Aaron Grovestock to transplant but very worth it as you will no doubt agree.

The final touches are soon to be made to the "Secret Path". This path runs down the side of the wall alongside The Bothy Gate.

It follows the existing path that was inside the greenhouses that once stood against the walls that are now painted white within the Walled Garden.

There will be further updates posted here.
