Shenley Park Walled Garden

History of the Terracing

When the Walled Garden was a kitchen garden it was on one level with a height difference of 7 metres drop from the top to the bottom of the Garden.

With the new design this drop was to be over three terraces, each terrace being approximately 2 metres in height.

The construction of the terraces began in 1994 using “permacrib” timber.

The terraces were positioned so that the “cut” equalled the “fill” and all the excellent topsoil that had literally built up over the centuries was re-used. Beneath the terracing and throughout the garden an extensive drainage system was installed.
