National Garden Scheme

The National Garden Scheme (NGS) is a predominantly voluntary charitable organisation that raises money for other charities by facilitating Garden openings to the public.

The NGS was founded in 1927 to raise money for the nurses of the Queen’s Nursing Institute by opening gardens of quality and interest to the public. The number of gardens open has increased from 609 to 3500 with over half a million visitors each year. The tradition of opening gardens of quality, character and interest is supported by the Patron, HRH The Prince of Wales. The charities that the NGS now supports are: Macmillan Cancer Support; Marie Curie Cancer Care; The Queen’s Nursing Institute; Help the Hospices; Crossroads Caring for Carers; The National Trust Gardening Careership; Perennial, the Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Society; The Royal Fund for Gardeners’ Children.

The Scheme is centered on the Yellow Book. The Yellow Book is printed every year and sold through major bookshops, newsagents and internet at a cost of £7.99. This book is a directory of every garden that is in the scheme. Gardens are grouped within counties and listed both by opening dates and by reference to a map of the area.

Gardens have to be of particularly high standard and be of interest to the public for at least 45 minutes to be accepted into the National Garden Scheme. We applied for the first timein 2007 to enter the National Garden Scheme and were delighted to be accepted. In 2008 despite three rainy evenings we were pleased to have raised £430 for the NGS.

For 2011 we are going to open the Garden on Mothers Day, Sunday 3rd April*. Refreshments and plant sales available together with Mothers Day Pampering courtesy of the Natural Gateway Clinic. Treat Mothers and yourselves to a choice of Indian Head Massage, Japanese Facial Massage, Reflexology or Reiki, for more information follow this link

A donation of £3 per adult that will go directly to the NG, children go free and all Mothers receive a free gift. Why not visit the Orchard Tea Room for lunch or afternoon tea?

* The Garden is normally closed at weekends during the Winter period.
