Shenley Park Walled Garden
History of the Apple Trees
When the Walled Garden was renovated the existing apple tree cordons and standards on the West side of the Garden were retained. The age of these trees is uncertain but it is thought that some of them may date back before the time of the Hospital when the Garden was part of the Porters Park Estate.
During the time of the Hospital, the Walled Garden together with the main Orchard, was re-populated by Mr Stanley Lord in the 1950s so the trees are at least 58 years old.

Daffodils underneath the apple tree cordons |
In 2006 daffodils were planted underneath the apple tree cordons, together with crocuses and anenomes underneath the standard apple trees.
In 2007 some soft fruit was introduced as a trial underneath the standard apple trees. This has proved successful so more fruit will be introduced to preserve the history of fruit production in the Garden.
In 2008 more apple and plum trees were planted on the East side of the Garden in front of the pear cordons that grow against the wall along from Gardeners Cottage.
